'By Mountain Path to Pistyll Rhaeadr' Leaflet![]() Secreted in a fold of the Berwyn Mountains in the north-east of Wales is one of the "Seven Wonders of Wales" - the remarkable Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall. With a drop higher than that of Niagara, and its secluded setting in the relatively undiscovered range of grassy mountains that are the Berwyns, Powys County Council recognised that more could be made of this attraction but were keen to ensure that increasing visitor numbers would not detract from the beauty and isolation of the location. The decision was taken to develop a walking route to the falls, discouraging access by car and encouraging visitors to make use of the existing facilities in the village of Llangynog. Simon Holt Marketing Services successfully tendered to identify a suitable route and produce an information and interpretive leaflet. Liaising with the County rights of way and countryside staff, two routes were walked and assessed in detail before a final route was agreed, a mountain path through a high, heather moorland pass, passing through ancient oakwoods and beside the tantalising remains of old slate industry workings for which the area was once renowned. SHMS consultants studied and walked the route, recommending the necessary remedial works nedeed on route furniture (stiles, gates, etc.), waymarking and general improvements necessary to make the route user-friendly to leisure walkers. A dedicated leaflet was researched and produced, to a format agreed with the County Council Countryside Access Officer, a format which could be adapted for use on an occasional series of walking and heritage leaflets planned for production over the next few years. ![]() The leaflet contains text and maps in English and Welsh with colour illustrations of local landmarks and features of interest. It is A3 size folded to third A4.
