Peak District National Park
Design, production and distribution of Coach Drivers Handbook.

 Coach Drivers Handbook

Over 22 million visitors each year makes the Peak District the world's second most visited National Park, beaten only by Mount Fuji in Japan. Visitor pressures on the southern end of the Pennines are thus immense, and the National Park Joint Planning Board has long been renowned for it's innovative schemes to alleviate such pressures.

A new approach was aimed at encouraging coach operators, both from the surrounding conurbations of Manchester, the Potteries, South and West Yorkshire and from further afield, to market scenic tours of the Peak. The long term aims are to further reduce the use of private cars for day trips to the National Park, to alleviate problems aggravated by the use of coaches on unsuitable roads and to ensure that visitors using the tours experience the very best aspects of the National Park.

Simon Holt Marketing Services was contracted to research and produce a guide for coach operators which would combine details of recommended routes in the National Park with information about "coach-friendly" visitor attractions, refreshment stops, scenic drives and points of historic and cultural interest. By careful selection of routes and close liaison with tourism, traffic management and highways staff, the objectives set by the Joint Planning Board are being met.

The resulting 'Coach Drivers Handbook for the Peak National Park' was designed to be user-friendly and flexible enough for the tours to be joined at many points of access to the National Park. It was also designed to complement existing publications, compiled by tourism staff working in the various local authorities which include parts of the Peak. It can also be used in both general marketing campaigns and in special marketing promotions encouraging the sustainable use of this cherished area of Britain.

Somerset County Council
